The Merchant and His Mule

A merchant had a mule to carry his goods to the market. The market place was far from the village. The merchant used to load the mule with heavy bundles. The mule grew very tired of carrying heavy loads.
One day while going to market, the mule stumbled and fell down in the stream. The entire load got wet. The merchant helped the mule to get up and walk. But the mule felt the load very light and reached the market easily.
The load was actually bundles of salt. As the mule tripped into the stream, the salt had melted in water. Now the mule’ got the idea. Everyday the mule stumbled in the stream on its way to the market to reduce the burden.
“I know that you are playing trick with me”, said the merchant, “I must teach you a good lesson.” Next day, he loaded the mule with jute bags and coir mats. The mule as usual stumbled in the stream on its way.
Alas! instead of reducing the burden grew heavier. The jute bags and coir ropes had soaked from the stream. The poor mule had to carry much more heavy burden to the market.

Moral: Insincerity to work begets loss.
